Irish rider Nicolas Roche has taken his best ever World Championships result in the elite men’s TT in Bergen, Norway.

On a course which effectively involved a flat TT combined with a hill climb at the end, Roche was 12th.

The new world champion is Tom Dumoulin who demolished the opposition.

Despite rainfall for those off towards the back end of the field, Dumoulin won by almost one minute.

He beat Primoz Roglic of Slovenia into the silver medal position by 58 seconds.

And taking the bronze was Team GB’s Chris Froome, who was some 1:21 down on the winner.

The TT was 31km and featured the 3.4km climb of Mount Fløyen at the end. It rises over nine per cent and the final kilometre is over 10 per cent.

Nicolas Roche finished in 12th place, some 1:54 down. That result beats his previous best result from a Worlds, in either the road race or TT.

He was 13th in the TT in Florence back in 2013 when Tony Martin (Germany) won from the now retired Bradley Wiggins (Team GB) and Fabian Cancellara (Switzerland).

Martin was the defending champion today but was critical of the fact the course ended atop the climb.

He said the course ruled him out of winning and he was proven right; coming home in 9th place some 1:40 down on the winner.

Nicolas Roche was just 33 seconds off Froome in 3rd place.
