May and McGlinchey crowned XC MTB Irish champions in Louth

Chris McGlinchey and Caoimhe May have won the elite gold medals at the XC MTB National Championships in Bellurgan Park, Co Louth.

McGlinchey (Spectra Wiggle p/b Vitus), who has switched from road to MTB, has already secured selection for Northern Ireland for the Commonwealth Games and is hopeful of qualifying for the 2024 Olympics in the discipline.

He was the clear winner of the 14-rider elite men's field yesterday; taking a lead early and simply building it all the way. He adds his gold from yesterday to the national cyclocross and e-racing titles he took earlier this year.

David Montgomery (Spellman Dublin Port), who has ridden very well on the road this year, took the silver medal some 4:48 behind winner McGlinchey in the five-lap, 1½ hour, race. Darnell Moore (Caldwell Cycles) claimed bronze - making for a podium of riders who have all won the cyclocross national title - at 2:13.

In the elite women's race, featuring six elites and three juniors, May (Pinergy Orwell Wheelers) put in a big opening lap, of three, and then extended it during the following lap over nearest challenger, junior rider Hannah McClorey (RFDA). While McClorey closed up on the lone leader a little on the final lap, May already had her hands on the gold medal and ran out the winner by 1:14.

Niamh McKiverigan (Scott Bright Motor Group) also put in a very good shift in the title race, taking the bronze and finishing just 16 seconds behind McClorey after closing right up on her on the second lap before the gap opened again.

Related News

Travis Harkness (VC Glendale) won the junior men's race from Curtis Neill (Carn Wheelers) and Jake White (IMBRC). Lee Clarke (Shelbourne Orchard) claimed the Masters 30 title while Paul McCarter (Spellman-Dublin Port) triumphed in the Masters 40 race while while off-road legend and three-time Olympian Robin Seymour (Team Worc) was crowned Masters 50 champion.
