Jack Lawless (18), Emer Heverin (16) crowned Irish junior TT champions

Emer Heverin (CAMS Majaco) and Jack Lawless (Gorey Cycling Club) have nailed their performances in the junior women's and men's TTs at the National Road Championships in Co Mayo to win their title races.

Both riders went into their events as favourites, especially Heverin, who this year has already won the elite women's National Criterium Championships, in Dublin last month.

However, Lawless has also been producing some very strong performances this year and was last man off in the 30.7km TT this evening in Swinford.

His gold medal result has confirmed his status as the favourite, albeit with other clear contenders, and now very definitely launches his career proper on the road.

At the 18km split, Lawless was leading and had 17 seconds on James Armstrong (Region Sud Cycling Academy), with Freddie Winkley (Harrogate Nova Race Team) 3rd at 27 seconds, just four seconds faster than Rian McCrystal (Cannibal B Victorious).

By the finish, things had changed a little, with Armstrong having gained on Lawless, but still giving away six seconds to him; Lawless winning from silver medal man Armstrong. Winkley was 3rd at 29 seconds.

In the women’s race, Heverin was already almost two minutes up on Holly McCaffrey (Longcourt Hotel-NCW Wheelers) and she drove home that advantage over the remainder of the course.

By the finish she was 3:25 up on silver medal winner McCaffrey, with Ffion Dolan (VW Breda) claiming the bronze in the Castlebar CC-promoted race, at 4:06.

More to come very shortly.
