Evan Keane (Orwell Wheelers) and Greta Lawless (Dawson Racing) were on the mark this evening, Wednesday, in Dublin, when they won the men's and women's senior races at the Stephen Roche GP in Dundrum, south Dublin.
Lawless, an off-road specialist, scalped some very strong road riders in the sprint finish to the women's event, taking the victory after Ellen Ni Cleirigh (Longcourt Hotel-NCW Wheelers) got her lap countdown wrong.
Ni Cleirigh sprinted for the line one lap too early and when the field came around again for the finish, cyclocross and MTB international Lawless made no mistake.
Lawless, who has been racing on the road in the UK of late, won the day from Ni Cleirigh and Mia Smith (Brother UK-Team OnForm).
In the men's race, which also came down to a bunch sprint, Keane just about held off Ruairi Byrne (UCD Cycling Club) and Max Fitzgerald (Team Skyline).
Jack Conroy (Velo Performance) was next, in 4th, followed by Paul Kennedy (Burren CC) and Ronan O'Connor (APS Pro Cycling).
Fitzgerald, who won last year's edition as a second-year junior, came through like a rocket at the finish.
But he perhaps left it a little too late to come off the wheels and take the win, with Keane very good value in taking the victory for the host club and Byrne also getting the better of young Fitzgerald.
More to come.
