Irish cyclist Aaron Wade has made the podium on the final day of racing at Trofeu ciclista Pla de Mallorca. However, while compatriot Marcus Christie gave it his all in defence of his yellow jersey, he lost out to stage winner Sascha Weber.

Trek Vaude rider Weber is a 33-year-old former German
national cyclocross champion and former cyclocross international. When he
attacked on the final climb of yesterday’s stage he swept all before him.

He claimed a strong solo stage win and also lifted the yellow jersey from the shoulders of former Irish international Christie; Weber winning overall from Christie in 2nd and Wade in 3rd.

The final stage of the race yesterday saw the riders tackle
a 105.5km route from Montuiri to Santuari de Cura.

Christie rode the stage in defence of the race lead he
took on Saturday’s stage 3 TT, which he won. However, as yesterday’s stage 4
wore on, Christie (Unattached) was spending his reserves covering the attacks.

And when the experienced Weber attacked at the bottom of the final climb his move was decisive and he went on solo to win the day and, crucially, gain a significant amount of time.

Weber finished the stage 58 seconds clear of runner-up Dominik
Bauer (23) of the Dauner D&DQ-Akkon Continental team. Ireland’s Wade (19), of Powerhouse Sport, placed 3rd on
the stage, at exactly one minute. Yellow jersey Christie (30) was 6th, some
1:05 down on Weber.

In the end, Weber won the race overall by 30 seconds from Christie, with Wade wrapping up 3rd overall, some 1:02 down on the winner.

Wade had enjoyed two race wins in Spain before the four-stage race in Mallorca and he collected his third win of the season on stage 2 of the race last Friday. Christie won Saturday’s stage 3 TT to take yellow, though Weber was simply too strong for him yesterday.
