Aggressive Eddie Dunbar lights it up in Italy as Team Sky wins again

Ireland’s Eddie Dunbar has once again imposed himself in helping Team Sky to another victory in Italy.

With just a week to go to the U23 road race at the World Championships, Eddie Dunbar looks in the form of his life with Team Sky.

The young Irishman was in again with his new team in Italy; in the Giro della Toscana-Memorial Alfredo Martini (1.1).

At 199km tackled a circuit in Pontedera three times with the Monte Serra climb each lap. Dunbar was aggressive in attacking off the front and also closing down moves.

His work, as was the case on his debut last Friday, paved the way for Gianni Moscon to get clear and take victory.

Dunbar was in the thick of the action on the last lap and was active off the front on the final passage of the climb.

The attacking saw a three-man group of heavy hitters pull clear, with Moscon present.

With him was Romain Bardet (AG2R-La Mondiale) and Domenico Pozzovivo  (Bahrain Merida).

They would pull clear and put over a minute into a chasing group of about 20. Moscon proved too strong for his two rivals in the sprint to the line; winning from Bardet and then Pozzovivo.

Giovanni Visconti (Bahrain Merida) would win the sprint for 4th place from the chasing group some 1:22 behind Moscon. Dunbar was in that group.

When the race arrived on the climb for the last time, Team Sky’s two stagiaires, Mark Donovan and Ethan Hayter, were on the front driving the group.

Kenny Elissonde then took over for Team Sky and his work split the field on the climb. Then it was the turn of Dunbar, driving it up the climb and chasing down an early move.

The Irishman set such a frantic pace up the climb that only a handful of riders stayed with him; indeed it was effectively his work that made the breakaway.

When he pulled over with just under 30km remaining, the three who would ride clear had already ridden away from the rest of the field because they had been able to stay with Dunbar.

Moscon's gap in the company of his fellow escapees became properly established on the descent, with Dunbar getting into the chase group after his work was done.
