Huge result for Josie Knight at Euro Champs; Cork teen into pursuit gold medal ride off

Josie Knight has been a huge talent on the road for some time now, but today she's bagged a medal at the European Championships on the track.

Josie Knight has scored an amazing result on the velodrome in Portugal at the European Track Championships; the Kanturk youngster coming home fastest in the individual pursuit qualifiers this morning.

It means she is now into the gold medal ride off later today and is guaranteed a medal for Ireland; either silver or gold.

The first year junior finished in a time of 2.29.467 this morning.

She meets Russia’s Daria Egorova in the gold medal ride off, at approximately 7.10pm.

This afternoon Ryan Mullen and Dylan Foley will also compete; racing in the U23 individual pursuit qualifiers, an event in which Mullen won a bronze medal last year.

Knight, who rides for O'Leary Stone Kanturk but is competing for Ireland this week, is part of a crop of young riders who have been taken into the national set-up under the watchful eye of Cycling Ireland’s head coach Brian Nugent.

At the Europeans in Portugal this week he is leading Ireland’s largest ever squad at a major championships, with 13 riders at junior and U23 level racing for medals between today and Sunday.

They have been preparing of late in Majorca. That preparation combined with the previous experience she has built up competing at the Youth Olympics last year has clearly stood Knight in good stead.

However, the fact she would lead home an international field at the first time of asking at this level is a simply staggering result.

We’ll have more later.
