Huge crash forces cancellation of Tour de Bretagne | Video

Almost the entire bunch came down in this crash on stage 6 at Le Tour de Bretagne Cycliste today

The organisers of Le Tour de Bretagne Cycliste were forced to cancel stage 6 of the race today when a huge crash on a section of dirt road brought down most of the bunch. The Tudor Pro Cycling Team of race leader Simon Pellaud were on the front of the peloton, pushing the pace of a descent, when the incident occurred.

Very unusually, the crash took out riders from the very front of the bunch to the back, with just a small number of riders at the very back - and who had time to stop - not falling. It was decided the race should be neutralised and the 206km stage from Châteaubriant to Plancoët also did not count towards the general classification.

The crash took place with 122km covered and it was decided by the race organisers - in consultation with the medical staff and teams - that the stage should be cancelled. However, the riders took to their bikes again and rode to the finish, taking time to high-five crowds by the roadside on the remaining climbs.

"The decision was not easy to make," said Christophe Fossani, president of the Tour de Bretagne. "I wanted to be able to resume with a full medical team, which was unfortunately no longer possible.

"Regarding the fall, there was simply a small area of mud on a nice dry course. The passage was signaled by the Republican Guard with a yellow flag. This fall at the front was enough to lead the whole peloton. It's a racing fact. "
