Dillon Corkery wins atop Glengesh Pass, Just behind, team mate Conor Halvey celebrates taking Rás Dhun na nGall outright (Photo: David McVeigh - The Belgian Project)
It may have been Dillon Corkery who claimed in final stage atop Glengesh Pass today, but it was Conor Halvey who made a tasty bit of history in Rás Dhun na nGall.
The 16-year-old and NRPT-Titan Containers man and team mate Corkery reached the top of the feared climb together at the end of this afternoon’s final stage.
Corkery won on the day but it was Halvey who sealed outright victory. In doing so he became the first Donegal rider ever to win the race.
Conor Gallagher (Castlebar CC) was 3rd today, just 3 seconds back. And then a sizeable 1:07 would elapse before Ethan Downey (Island Wheelers) finished along for 4th.
Overnight race leader and stage 1 winner Eoghan McLaughlin, also of NRPT-Titan Containers, finished in the next group on the road 1:44 down.
And having led Halvey by just 2 seconds going into today’s 61.4 mile stage, it was Halvey who ran out the overall winner.
He takes the 2017 title by 18 seconds from Corkery, with Gallagher 3rd overall at 35 seconds and Downey 4th at 1:09.
Young Downey has won a series of races this season and while he could not add to that this weekend he rode out of his socks today.
He missed the boat when a six-man breakaway went clear early on. And when that group, containing Corkery, Halvey, Gallagher and Mark McKinley (Newry Wheelers), eventually got three minutes, Downey attacked after them.
He got to within nine seconds but couldn’t close the rest of the gap.
McKinley would be dropped on the climb by Corkery, Halvey and Gallaher. Downey would catch and pass him and take 4th.
The breakaway was begun early in the stage by Gallagher; the Castlebar man clearly having no fear of the climb to come.
Corkery went after him and they were then joined by Halvey and McKinley.
The gap did not immediately shoot out though, indeed far from it. For the first 60km the gap back to the peloton stayed between about 15 and 45 seconds.
But by 75km the elastic snapped and the gap shot out to three minutes. Downey got to within 9 seconds of them with 30km to go.
But with Corkery and Halvey clearly keen not to let him on before the climb, he just failed to close up.
And from that point it became the Halvey-Corkery show. The former took the overall win, having lost his yellow jersey on yesterday afternoon’s stage 3.
And Corkery took the stage win, 2nd overall and the mountains classification. NRPT-Titan Containers also won the team prize.
