Ellen McDermott (Team Boompods) has been
crowned Irish criterium champion after a brilliant sprint carried her to the
title in Co Galway this evening.

She saw off Lauren Creamer (Brotherton
Cycles) and track Olympian Shannon McCurley (Unattached Leinster) for the national
crown in Tynagh.

The racing was run off on the Pallas
karting circuit and the women, unlike last year when their race was a
demonstration event, were racing for a national title on the same evening as
the men.

McDermott came to cycling relatively
late and did much of her early racing in Scotland. In recent years she has
raced more on the Continent.

Her class was made clear when she took
bronze in the national road race championships in Wexford two years ago.

But this evening she moved up two steps
on the podium and leaves Galway with an elite Irish gold medal and an Irish
champion’s jersey.

She stole a march on the other top
contenders this evening and in the end won it well; having plenty of time to
savour the victory.

More to come.
