Downey strikes again for solo win from Chivers and Smyth

Ethan Downey charges flat out for the finish with Andrew Chivers just behind and the bunch already sprinting in the background.

Just over a week since taking his first win against senior riders, emerging junior cyclist Ethan Downey has done it again.

This time the 17-year-old took victory in the Killylough GP in Scotstown, Co Monaghan.

He came home solo just about clear of Andrew Chivers from North Down CC.

There was then a small gap before Shane Smyth (Moynalty CC) took the sprint for 3rd from a bunch.

On St Patrick’s Day young Downey took flight from the limit group in Derrymacash GP in Lurgan, Co Armagh.

He rode across to the A4 group on his own before dropping them and claiming a solo victory.

And yesterday he rode in a similar fashion, though Chivers was much closer to him at the finish than the best of the rest in Lurgan 10 days ago.

And the group behind was breathing down the necks of both Downey and Chivers.

In the A4 race the honours were decided in a bunch sprint.

It was won by Chris McAlorum (Shelbourne-Orchard Wheelers) whose kick was too good for his rivals.

Feargal Magee (Apollo CC) was just behind in 2nd, with Craig Gibson (Carn Wheelers) rounding out the podium in the Killylough CC-promoted event.
