Northern Ireland MTB rider Cameron Orr on his way to a strong Commonwealth Games result. Marc Potts, a road and track rider, competed in the race on a borrowed bike and still has the road race to come.
Cameron Orr great Commonwealth Games MTB ride
Cameron Orr has taken a very strong 8th place in the MTB race at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games for Northern Ireland.
His compatriot Marc Potts – a track and road rider – also competed in the race. He was 17th on the day; the former off-road rider competing on a bike borrowed for the race.
Orr can very happy with his ride, coming home as he did some 2:30 behind the race winner. Potts was lapped by the front runners; not an unusual feature of MTB racing.
The race was won by Samuel Gaze after one hour and seventeen minutes in the saddle. He beat fellow Kiwi Anton Cooper in a two-up sprint; both men finishing on the same time.
That result was a reversal of the Commonwealth Games result from four years ago.
The winner punctured at the start of the last lap with Cooper and eventual bronze medal winner Alan Hatherly (South Africa) pulling ahead.
However, Gaze put in a fantastic chase and caught the leading pair. The two Kiwis would drop Hatherly and sprinted it out for the title.
More to follow.
