Boyd and McKiverigan out front again at Ulster Cyclocross Series

Graham Boyd and Niamh McKiverigan ran out the winners again in the fourth round of the Ulster Cyclocross Series yesterday.

Boyd had time to spare at the end of the elite men's contest at Henry Jones Playing Fields.

And while the women's race was a little closer, there was no doubt again about the winner; McKiverigan really on a roll in recent weeks.

In the men’s race it was young Lee Harvey of Glendale VC
who got the better start and within a very short time the race was between him
and Boyd.

However, it was McConvey’s Boyd who eventually nudged
clear; closing down the gains on lap two, of nine, that Harvey had made on the
opening circuit.

And on the third lap Boyd began to get the upper hand.
However, Harvey showed steel in not folding and he was faster, by four seconds,
that Boyd on the fourth lap.

Though the more experienced campaigner then put daylight
into the younger rider over the remaining five laps, Harvey did well to contain
the eventual winner to 49 seconds on the line.

But it was Boyd who proved the strongest and he took
another very confident win.

The women’s race turned into a great battle between Niamh
McKiverigan (Scott-Eurocycles) and Rachel Irvine (The Bike House CC).

While McKiverigan eventually won the scrap, she took a
little bit of time to get going as Irvine was faster in the opening exchanges.

Indeed, over the first three laps of seven Irvine was
quicker by a total of about 10 seconds.

But McKiverigan turned it on during the fourth lap;
gaining back all the time she had lost and maintaining that pace for the next
two laps.

And though she eased back the throttle a little on the final
circuit, she already had victory in the bag and was 22 seconds up on Irvine on
the line.

Judith Russell (Phoenix CC) took 3rd place, just over two
minutes down on runner-up Irvine.
