Sam Bennett is really in the big time now; scalping huge names on his way to a stage win and the yellow jersey, above, at the Bayern Rundfahrt opener.
Having been out of racing action for over a month, Sam Bennett returned with a bang today when he won the opening stage of the Bayern Rundfahrt.
The Carrick man takes the yellow jersey for his troubles, having seen off Grand Tour multi stage winners Nacer Bouhanni (Cofidis) and John Degenkolb (Giant-Alpecin).
Degenkolb’s was a particularly impressive scalp to take as he has been in great for this year, winning Paris Roubaix and Milan San Remo of late.
The victory is perhaps Bennett’s most impressive of his career to date.
He was quickest in the dash to the line at the end of the 221.3km stage from Regensburg to Waldsassen after the early breakaway had been overhauled.
He will wear the yellow jersey into tomorrow’s 179km leg from Waldsassen to Selb.
More later.

Bennett's Bora-Argon 18 team was a constant presence on or near the front in hunting down the early escape and setting up the Irishman for a great victory.
