Ben Healy has taken his career-best result against the watch with 6th place in the elite men's TT at the European Championships in Germany today. Over the 24km course in Fürstenfeldbruck Healy (21) was 56 seconds down on gold medal winner, and EF Education-EasyPost team mate, Stefan Bissegger.
The Swiss rider, who was fancied to take the opening stage of the Tour de France this year but a crash-hit run in that TT, today deposed last year's title winner and compatriot Stefan Küng. World champion Filippo Ganna (Italy) was 3rd.
In a very close run thing at the top, there was just one second behind gold and silver; Bissegger recording a time of 27:06 to Küng's 27:07. Ganna was only nine seconds down on the gold medal winner.
Healy's 6th place finish is by no means his only top result this year as he has repeatedly gone on the attack in his first season at World Tour level and was especially impressive at the Tour of Norway.
He had targeted a strong ride today, so much so that he decided not to ride the men's road race in Munich last Sunday in favour of putting all of his efforts into the TT today. The time trial course was only one that suited Healy - and did not completely play into the hands of the big power riders - as it featured a climb close to the start.
More to come.
