Archie Ryan (EF Education-EasyPost) has gone on the attack for the third time at La Vuelta and has ended stage 10 with the best result of his career.
Though Ryan has won races since becoming a professional at the start of last year, his performances at this Vuelta have been on another level so far, and he looked his strongest yet racing to 4th place today.
Having made the large breakaway, Ryan was in the first half when it split. He later proved one of the very strongest as the front group split to pieces on the final climb to the finish at El Ferial Larra Belagua, after 175.3km of racing.
Up front, Jay Vine (UAE Team Emirates XRG) was far too strong for his breakaway rivals, attacking the final climb to take his second stage win, this time by 35 seconds from last year's double stage winner Pablo Castrillo (Movistar Team).
Javier Romo (Movistar Team) rounded out the podium, at 1:04, with Ryan just one second behind, finishing in 4th place at 1:05. Though Ryan was caught on the line by the general classification group - numbering just 10 riders - he was not passed by them and so hung on for a deserved 4th place.
He adds that result to his 9th place on Sunday's stage 9, with the Irishman having also gone on the attack on stage 6, though the escapees did not make it all the way to the finish that day.
Ireland's Eddie Dunbar, a double stage winner on last year's Vuelta for Team Jayco AlUla, was 39th on today's stage, some 4:58 down on winner Vine. It is hoped he will take on the race, in search of a win, later this week and into next week.
More to come.
