Colm Bracken leads in a clean sweep of the podium places for Murphy Surveys Kilcullen CC at last night's round of the Bikeworx Series in Mondello Park, Co Kildare
Colm Bracken last night led in a clean sweep of the podium places for Murphy Surveys Kilcullen CC at the latest round in the Bikeworx Series, Mondallo Park, Co Kildare.
The Dubliner took victory in a sprint finish from team mate and fellow veteran Mark Kiernan, with their junior team mate Barry Talt in third place.
Bracken began the night in the A3 group, which was given a handicap on the A1 and A2 men behind and was chasing an A4 bunch that went off first.
On the first lap of the event, run over an hour and three laps, Bracken got clear of the A3s in a small group that worked well together in making their way across to the A4 bunch.
In that escape were the eventual winner's Murphy Survey Kilcullen CC team mate Talt, Kenny Conlon of Naas CC and John Ennis and Conn McDunphy, both from Lucan CRC.
While they were not caught by either the A3s or the large A1-A2 group chasing behind, a group of four did get across in the closing stages which included runner-up Kiernan.
Sean McKenna of UCD CC, who had made much of the running in trying to close down the leaders, eventually broke clear alone from the scratch group. And while he made the juncture with the leaders very late in the race, he had to settle for 4th place in the dash to the line.
Lucan's Ennis made a bid for victory just before the last bend, but Bracken covered that and powered down the straight for his first win of the season.
Aged 48 years, his win last night comes in a senior career spanning 30 years. We'll catch up with him later.
