Aaron Doherty took a remarkable win in the T. Bourke Criterium in Westport over the weekend when he got the better of established elite road men Sean Yelverton (Mego RAW Cycles) and Anthony Murray (Cunga CC).

The young Westport Covey Wheelers man started with the A3 riders with a 20-second head-start over the combined A1 and A2 group and he wasted no time in trying to bridge to the A4 men further up the road.

He had little difficulty in getting across to the head of the race and he mopped up the primes on laps 3 and 15 before deciding to sit in.

At that point in the 45-minute plus 3-lap affair, a threatening break from the scratch group was making its way across.

It featured Daire Feeley and David Brody from iTap, Anthony Murray (Cunga CC) and Sean Yelverton (Mego RAW Cycles) so Doherty took flight from the group he was in up ahead.

Incredibly, he got to the tail-end of the scratch group – minus the breakaway quartet - and weighed up his options.

He was already winning the race but not happy with that he jumped clear of the scratch group, rode across to the break for a fantastic victory.

We’ll have a catch-up with this young man tomorrow.
