Marine Lenehan, the reigning European Gran Fondo champion, has gone one better than last year at Gran Fondo Strade Bianche by taking the victory into Siena at the weekend.
The Dan Morrissey-Primór by Pissei rider was among the leading women through the race. And on the challenging run-in to the line she managed to pulled clear of those who had stayed with her during the four-hour event over the white gravel sectors in Tuscany.
A delighted Lenehan swung into the square in Siena, now one of the most iconic finishes in cycling, to win the day by quite a clear margin over her nearest rivals after 138.5km of action.
Italian rider Annalisia Prato (Om.cc) placed 2nd, some 22 seconds behind Lenehan after proving unable to cope with her finishing effort. Slovenian Laura Simenc (Team De Rossa Santini) rounded out the podium, some 36 seconds behind the Irish winner.
In the combined men's and women's Gran Fondo event, featuring 3,326 riders, Lenehan placed 149th.
