Eoghan McLaughlin, who was one of the best juniors in the country during the 2016 and 2017 seasons, has now broken through to play Gaelic football at senior level for Mayo.
The 19-year-old has switched his sport prowess on the
bike to Gaelic Games and was part of the Mayo senior panel yesterday that
played Monaghan in the Allianz Football League division 1 clash.
McLaughlin won some great races in Ireland, and took a tidy victory in Belgium as a junior, has been playing U20 football for Mayo.
He plays his club football with Westport and came off the bench two weeks ago in Páirc Tailteann when the Mayo senior footballers, the defending Division 1 league champions, got the better of Meath.
And having impressed of late he was included in the panel
again yesterday when Mayo traveled to Clones for their latest Allianz Football
League by the home side.
Having made the breakthrough to the senior team he has been praised in the sports media for bringing pace and power to the Mayo defence.
As a junior McLaughlin won the final stage of the Gorey
Three Day in his first year of the category. The following year he won a stage
at Rás Dhun na nGall and held the yellow jersey.
He also won a stage of Rás Maigh Eo and was king of the hills classification winner as a first-year junior in the Junior Tour of Ireland. McLaughlin rode for Westport Covey and for the NRPT junior team.
