Iván Sosa (Movistar) complained about being assaulted by an armed truck driver earlier this week, but now the Colombian cyclist is also facing charges over his alleged role in the road rage clash while he was out training.
A truck driver Sosa said hit him in the face with the handle of a gun, after first firing shots, has also been charged. The driver alleged Sosa threw water at him and damaged his truck by throwing a rock at it. Both are now facing charges in Colombia, with the driver presenting documents showing he was permitted to legally carry the gun.
The driver has been charged with injuring Sosa, who suffered a nasty wound to his chin during the incident. Sosa now faces a charge of damaging the driver's property.
The 25-year-old rider was training last Thursday morning on the Fusa-Silvania highway in Chinauta, just south of Bogotá, when the incident occurred, apparently because he believed the trucker was driving dangerously close to him. It is alleged the rider was struck in the face by the driver with the handle of a revolver.
Sosa was taken for treatment to a medical centre in Fusagasugà and in a photo released on social media, which was taken by his father, he had a wound on his chin and blood down his jersey.
Sosa joined Movistar at the start of last year after three seasons with Team Sky/Ineos Grenadiers during which he won Vuelta a Burgos (2.HC) and Tour de la Provence (2.Pro), but was largely sidelined with few major opportunities in the British team.
On moving to the Spanish team at the start of last year he won a stage and the overall at Vuelta Asturias Julio Alvarez Mendo (2.1) before following up with more success at season end when he won the queen stage and the overall at Le Tour de Langkawi (2.Pro).
