Iván Sosa, last year's Tour de Langkawi (2.Pro) winner with his Movistar team, has been taken for medical treatment in his native Colombia after sustaining injuries in an incident with a truck driver. Sosa was struck in the face with the handle of a gun after the truck driver involved first fired a number of shots in a road rage incident.
Movistar has confirmed an incident took place, while Sosa was training on Thursday morning on the Fusa-Silvania highway in Chinauta, just south of Bogotá. The rider was struck in the face with the handle of a revolver by the truck driver, with reports suggesting the driver accused him of throwing water, and a stone, at him. The driver's alleged actions are now under investigation by the police.
Sosa was taken for treatment to a medical centre in Fusagasugà and in a photo released on social media, which was taken by his father, he has a wound on his chin and blood down his jersey.
"We confirm that Iván Sosa has been treated for chin injuries at a medical center in Fusagasugá, his place of origin, after the incident suffered this Thursday. The Movistar Team cyclist has remained conscious at all times," Movistar said in a brief statement.
Sosa (25) joined Movistar at the start of last year after three seasons with Team Sky/Ineos Grenadiers during which he won Vuelta a Burgos (2.HC) and Tour de la Provence (2.Pro), but was largely sidelined with few major opportunities in the British team.
On moving to the Spanish team at the start of last year he won a stage and the overall at Vuelta Asturias Julio Alvarez Mendo (2.1) before following up with more success at season end when he won the queen stage and the overall at Le Tour de Langkawi (2.Pro).
More to come.
