Christie: This year will be about having fun, next year the Rás

Marcus Christie has said his return to cycling after retiring six months ago was simply down to the fact that he missed the buzz the bike gave him.

The 25 year-old Derry man called time on his career towards the latter end of last year and opted to take up full-time education instead.

And while he’s still studying (for a sports science degree) he’s going to race amateur for the remainder of 2016 “just for fun”.

“I started doing the bun run once a week a few months ago and I got the bug back for cycling,” he said.

“I’m just going to race for fun and see where it goes. I’ve no expectations or goals at the minute.”

Christie has joined Causeway CC and is going to do the Tour of Ulster this weekend, however, as part of the Tyrone Image Express team.

But how well he’ll go is something he’s less than sure of.

“I only started continuous riding three weeks ago and I’ve just been riding around with no Garmin.

“I’ve just been rolling the big ring, not over complicating things.

“I’m good friends with the guy in charge of the team Robert Downes; it’s a well-run club and does a lot for charity and helping people get into cycling.

“Hopefully next year I can aim for the Rás and take things more seriously but in the meantime I'll hope to do a few good time-trials and just enjoy it again.”
