A UCI Junior Nations Cup race in Germany, LVM Saarland Trofeo (2.Ncup), was marred by a high-speed crash yesterday, Sunday, after a woman on a mobility scooter edged out into the road.
The bunch was lined out and flying past her vantage point when the front of the scooter edged out into the road causing the awful incident.
A quick-thinking Danish rider just about managed to squeeze past the scooter, to his left, but a Dutch rider behind him wasn't so lucky.
He hit the scooter at full speed, sending him flying over the handlebars and causing a number of other riders to also hit the deck hard.
The result was several riders left lying on the tarmac stunned and injured, and probably wondering what had just happened.
The final stage was won by Alistair Forsyth (Australia) while the general classification victory was secured by Sindre Orholm-Lønseth (Norway). Ireland did not have a team in the race.
