Cancellara already gaining weight just weeks into retirement

Fabian Cancellara looking slightly fuller in the face despite having only stopped racing a matter of weeks ago. He says he has gained a fair bit of weight and will need to be careful.

The Olympic TT champion Fabian Cancellara has stopped racing just a matter of weeks, having been in wind-down mode since Rio, and already he’s been gaining some weight.

The Swiss legend had his last competitive outing in the Japan Cup Criterium just last month but his career effectively ended in Rio.

And having done no cycling in recent weeks and very little since the summer, he says he has already gained between 5 and 6 kilo; that’s almost one stone in old money.

“It’s scary when you feel that you get fatter,” he said at the launch of his new book in Belgium.

“I would like to still be a bit fit. Not that I should be as sharp as Sven Nys.

"But I have to keep an eye on it anyway. Once you're no longer a sportsman, the kilos come very quickly."

Cancellara add that after a 16-year career as a pro he wanted now to spend some time with his family and allow life to settle down a little.

However, while he would not elaborate on what his long term plans were, he wanted to study some subjects in the sports marketing area, which he said fascinated him.

"Since Rio I have been busy with 1001 things (like) sponsorship activities, bike shows, galas; it does not stop,” he said.

“I let the things come to me. I suspect it will be less busy in a few weeks and then I can really make plans."
