Ryan Reilly was victorious in the Red Hand Trophy over the weekend, underlining his potential as a classy bike rider and one who will need to be watched very closely in the run-up to the U23 national championships next month.

The Foyle CC man beat Ali Gribbon of Carn Wheelers at the end of the 68-mile event yesterday with the latter’s teammate Joe McRory rounding out the podium.

That trio had been part of a bigger break of eight that went clear and stayed away for much of the afternoon.

A strong field of 80 riders took part and in there were A1, A2 and A3 riders, one of who was the returning Ryan Sherlock.

The Monaghan man hasn’t raced much on the road this season but is always a threat when he does and he took fifth on this occasion, just behind fourth place Conn McDunphy (Lucan CRC).
