It may have been lashing rain, and with a huge mountain to come, but Sam Bennett clearly impressed this kid and his dad with this gesture mid stage on the Giro; a class touch from the Irish stage winner.

Fresh from his sprint stage win the previous day, Sam Bennett made two friends for life during Saturday’s stage 8 at the Giro.

It took the riders 209km from Praia a Mare to Montevergine di Mercogliano, with a summit finish to be tackled.

The heavens had opened and Sam Bennett was back the road in the large group focused on making the time cut.

But when he saw a kid by the side of the road, standing in the rain to watch his heroes, Bennett stood out among the riders.

As this video  shows, he came out of the group and over to the side of the street where the boy was standing. He whipped a bidon out of its cage and gave it to the kid as he passed.

The words may be in Italian, but not translation is required to know how pleased the boy’s father was at Bennett’s nice touch. And the child was pretty impressed too.

It was great to see Bennett represent Ireland so well with his well deserved win last Friday.

But this gesture is also really impressive; Ryan Mullen (Trek-Segafredo) having done something similar in Argentina earlier in the season.

Well done lads.
