With 220km in their legs most of the breakaway crashed at the European Road Race Championships in Glasgow.

There were 10 riders in the escape and just four were unaffected by the incident. It occurred on smooth tarmac as the riders turned right in what were wet conditions.

Maurits Lammertink of Holland was on the front and he misjudged the right-hander. He got around the corner but was headed for the barriers on the roadside and duly hit them.

While the riders immediately behind him managed to avoid the Dutchman, those further back crashed.

It appeared Nico Denz (Germany) may have hit the brakes nervously when Lammertink went down. Or he may simply have also misjudged the corner.

Either way, his wheels went from under him and others fell as a result. In total, four riders fell and two others were help up.

One of those delayed, the rider at the back in the blue of Italy, was Davide Cimolai. He was the only one to get back onto the four leaders immediately.

And  he would then go on to help team mate Matteo Trentin to victory. Mathieu Van der Poel (Holland) took  silver and Wout van Aert (Belgium) bronze.
