Aimee Dickson, a new Irish rider, has just broken her first national record on the track. The first-year junior, who has been racing in Britain where she is based, broke the flying 200m Irish junior marker at a race in Wales.
"It's amazing to see my name alongside cyclists I've watched on TV, or at the velodrome. Track sprint is a specialist event. If you want to do well in it, you need to focus on it, and that's what I've been doing for a few years now," she said.
"It's an exciting time for Irish track cycling, especially on the women's side. Orla Walsh is showing that Irish female sprinters can be competitive at international level, and I hope I can learn from her achievements as my own career develop."
Dickson set a time of 12.748 seconds for the flying 200m last month at the Blackline Open Track Meet in Newport, Wales. Riding for Palmer Park Velo Club, her new time beats the previous record of 13.165 seconds. That was set by Autumn Collins at the 2015 European Junior Championships in Athens.
Cycling Ireland has ratified the new record for Dickson, who has just switched her allegiance from Britain and is now riding on an Irish licence, meaning she will be eligible for Irish team selection as a junior next year.
In August Dickson was 7th in the 500m at the British Junior National Track Championships and was 11th in the keirin.
