Lara Gillespie crashes out of GP Oetingen but medical prognosis positive

Lara Gillespie has suffered her first set-back of the 2025 road race season but the medical prognosis after she crashed in Belgium today appears positive, though more tests must be carried out.

The Irish rider went into the 128km Ixina GP Oetingen p/b Lotto (1.Pro) as one of the clear pre-race favourites after the form she has been in since the start of the season.

However, with just over 25km remaining, Gillespie crash and could be seen in some distress and pain by the roadside and her UAE Team ADQ staff race to her aid. She was unable to take any further part in the race and was taken away for medical checks.

However, her team has told stickybottle the provisional outlook appears to be positive as there was no sign of any broken bones being diagnosed. Instead, Gillespie appears to have suffered abrasions and bruising.

"Fortunately, early medical reports indicate only big bruises and minor abrasions," he team said.

The race - from Sint-Pieters-Leeuw to Oetingen - featured small climbs and cobble sectors throughout but came down to a sprint from a much reduced bunch.

Julie De Wilde (Fenix-Deceuninck) claimed victory from Gillespie's team mate, Sofia Bertizzolo, with Chiara Consonni (CANYON//SRAM zondacrypto).

First-year U23 rider - and last year's European junior title winner on the track - Lucy Bénézet Minns (Lotto Ladies) - was also in action today and was among the non-finishers.
