Marcus Christie has shown some fantastic end of season form to smash the Irish record for the 100 mile time trial by more than seven minutes on Sunday.

The An Post-Chainreaction man set the new standard, which will have to be ratified by Cycling Ireland to become the official national record, at the Ulster 100 Mile TT Championships.

He beat the marker set last September by Bryan McCrystal (Aquablue), when he recorded a time of 3:34:52. Christie’s time on Sunday was 3:27:11, some 7:41 faster than the existing record.

McCrystal rode Sunday’s race in the 'visitor' category and was second fastest on the day, though was not eligible for an Ulster championships medal. He recorded a time of 3:36:39.

Sean McIntyre (Orchard Wheelers) was next fastest with a time of 3:36:40 and so took the senior silver medal, while veteran John Madden (Dig Deep Coaching) was next on 3:37:36 to take the vets’ title.

Steven Workman of Ballymena Road Club was 5th fastest on 3:45:40 and so took the bronze in the senior event.
