Plans are being explored for a cycling, and walking, route around Cape Clear, an island off west Cork, as part of efforts to boost tourism there and across the islands dotted around the coast of Ireland.
Cape Clear can be accessed by ferry from Baltimore and Schull and while cycling has not been developed on the island, many cyclists touring west Cork often visit Cape Clear; arriving and departing from different harbours on the mainland.
Minister of State at the Department of Rural and Community Development, Joe O'Brien TD, has now confirmed plans are in train to explore how a cycling route, which could also be used for walkers, could be put in place around Cape Clear, which offers spectacular views.
"I was on the Aran Islands last summer, where tourism is very well developed. I was more recently on Cape Clear in Cork as well. We have made some very important tourism commitments," Mr O'Brien told a Dáil debate on trying to develop the tourism offering on the islands.
"One of them is to assess the feasibility of developing new coastal walking trails and cycling routes to promote walking and cycling as part of the island experience.
"There is a policy measure to encourage water sports providers on the islands and to examine the feasibility of establishing new activity-based experiences that positively contribute to sustainable economic development and environmental conservation."
At present there are a number of ways to explore the island, including a 45-minute electric bus tour and two unofficial walking routes which offer stunning views of Cape Clear's southern cliffs.
