A new endurance event has been launched in the west of Ireland for next year, when the inaugural edition of The Western Challenge will take place in mid June.
Organised by Eoin McGrath of Challenge Sports Ireland, the event offers three different distances - 200km, 300km and 525km - for solo riders and teams.
The events take place on June 17th and 18th and all three endurance tests start and and finish in Salthill, Co Galway.
McGrath has organised a number of races in the west of Ireland in recent years, including the Challenge Race League, and said he was looking forward to getting The Western Challenge off the ground next summer.
"As organisers, we plan on delivering an ultra cycling event that will not only cater for the experienced ultra cyclist but help those who want to try the discipline for the first time," he said.
"The event will be chip timed and we are offering a support option for those taking on the event unsupported," he said.
Riders can use their own support crew and vehicles or can pay the organisers for that back-up to be provided for them. McGrath added the routes the event take place on were "most scenic and challenging roads the west of Ireland has to offer".
The 200km event is open to solo riders only while the 300km event is open to solo riders or two-rider teams. The 500km event is open to solo riders, two-rider teams and four-rider teams.
