Mondello 24-Hour endurance event unveils new plans for 2022

The Mondello 24 Hour attracted a very large field and a more than decent crowd in its inaugural edition this year and now it has set out its plans for next year

The organisers of the Mondello 24 have unveiled plans for the second edition of the endurance event, which will take place on an earlier date, in June, next year.

The inaugural edition was held in October, with cold and wet weather overnight posing a real challenge for the riders. The move to June will offer better odds of milder weather for those who take to the start line.

"After a hugely successful inaugural event, that will forever be known as 'the winter edition', given the conditions riders battled during the night, we are delighted to be hosting this unique 24-hour endurance race once again at our famed 3.5km international race circuit only this time with the additional bonus of summer temperatures," the organisers have said.

The 2022 edition will take place on June 18th and 19th and the organising group have stressed riders do not have to be racing cyclists to take part.

"While leading riders achieved impressive feats over the 24-hours, the winning team covered almost 900kms while the top solo rider achieved close to 700kms, Mondello24 is an event for all levels of cyclists, male or female, solo or team," they said.

"Whether you are an experienced rider or a newcomer looking to start exploring the world of endurance cycling, there is a category to suit all abilities as was proven by the 300 plus riders who took on the challenge last October."

Riders can compete solo or in teams of two, four or eight working in relay, which proved attractive to many clubs and groups this year.

The organisers report that 98 per cent of the riders who took part this year said they would do it again. They added the crowds and support crews that gathered at the Mondello Park venue, and specially in the paddock, made for a unique atmosphere which they believe will eclipsed next year.
