An Irish leisure cyclist has very sadly died after he sustained head injuries during a crash at the Wicklow 200 sportive on Sunday. The event organisers have confirmed the tragic passing of Pat Kelly, who was a very experienced rider and had completed the event 14 times.
Crashes in such events – or in races – are not uncommon but fatalities are extremely rare in leisure or racing events. However, Pat has succumbed to the head injuries he sustained on Sunday when he crashed. News of his death emerged today, four days after he suffered his crash.
“It is with a heavy heart that we have heard the news this morning that Pat Kelly has passed away after he was injured in a cycling accident at the Wicklow 200. Pat fell off his bike and sustained a serious head injury,” the Wicklow 200 said in a statement.
“Pat was an avid cyclist and this was the 14th time he took part in the Wicklow 200. From everyone in the cycling community and the Wicklow 200, our thoughts and condolences are with Pat’s wife Doreen and two sons Rory and Conor at this difficult time.
“Pat’s cycling group would like to highlight to everyone that cycling is a sport we all love but there are risks involved. We have a responsibility as cyclists to always be conscious of our safety and respect each other on the road.”
Stickybottle would also like to extend our deepest sympathies to Pat’s wife, Doreen, and sons and indeed all of his loved ones and friends.
