Tom Pidcock won last year's stage on Alpe d'Huez at Tour de France; a day when his descending was just as good as his climbing, and that's saying something. The British rider - a former cyclocross world champion and reigning Olympic MTB champion - is famed for his fearless bike handling.
And in this video - shot by Descent Disciples - the Ineos Grenadiers rider is filmed as he descends Tuna Canyon in the Los Angeles are in the United States. He suffers a very nervous moment early on in the 4.33km rider when his back wheel almost went from under him. However, he didn't miss and beat and continued weaving his way down the one-way descent.
Tuna Canyon, west of Santa Monica, drops by 396metres in 4.33km. The average gradient is -9.1 per cent, though it's -16 per cent in places according to the data displayed on screen. This film was shot when he was in the US training last autumn but was only published in the last 24 hours.
Pidcock is currently in Europe, where his season got underway last week at Volta ao Algarve em Bicicleta (2.Pro). He won stage 4 with a brilliant finishing burst atop Alto do Malhão, also taking the yellow jersey with just one stage remaining.
However, on the final stage - a 24.4km TT in Lagoa - Pidcock's inexperience riding against the watch cost him. He finished a lowly 17th on the stage and went down to 7th overall as his team mate Dani Martinez claimed the final yellow jersey.
