The organisers of the UCI-ranked Gran Fondo Ireland have secured permission to host the event on fully closed roads. the measure, which is rare for Irish cycling events, should help foster an atmosphere befitting what will be a Grand Fondo World Championships qualifying event.
The Gran Fondo Ireland – set to take place in Sligo in June – is very much a race, and not just a participation event, and the closed roads will give those intent on racing it the opportunity to fully commit in a safe environment.
“I am absolutely thrilled to confirm the full road closure for the UCI Gran Fondo World Series in Sligo," said event director Michael Hurl. "No matter what level of cyclist you are, you will be able to feel what it is like to participate in a pro event.
"This is a monumental achievement and a testament to the collaborative efforts of our team and the incredible support from Sligo County Council and the wider stakeholders.
"Securing a full road closure is a rare opportunity in the world of cycling events, and it elevates the UCI Gran Fondo in Sligo to an unparalleled level of experience for cyclists and spectators alike.”
Riders will compete in the 26km TT on the Saturday and pick one of three cycling routes on Sunday; the longest being the 155km Gran Fondo, followed by the 110km Medium Fondo and 85km Sportive distance.
“The ‘Sportive’ is slightly different in that it’s open to purely leisure cyclists, whereas the Grand Fondo and Medium Fondo will be open to both leisure cyclists and those who want to compete for qualification for the World Championships.”
