Deer jumps over group of riders at Gran Fondo Hincapie | Video

A deer gets significant height as it jumps over this group of riders at Gran Fondo Hincapie in the US

These riders got more than they bargained for on the recent Gran Fondo Hincapie when a startled deer jumped over their group, clipping one of the cyclists but avoiding a crash.

The wild animal is visible across the top of the video as the riders were on their way to start the Gran Fondo in Greenville, South Carolina, on October 21st.

In the clip below, the footage is being recorded by one of the riders - Edwin Gonzalez Montoya - who was sitting directly behind former pro rider George Hincapie when the deer shoots out and into the air, much to the riders' surprise.

Hincapie - a Tour de France stage winner and former US champion who also served a doping ban - clearly sees the deer coming from the left. He then ducks as the deer jumps over the group, before checking back to see if anyone has crashed.

Luckily, the deer manages to clear the group, but he clipped Montoya, who was very lucky to avoid being hit by the animal and crashing, as happened in the Phoenix Park, Dublin, in 2016.
