Cyclists, walkers find "absolutely disgraceful" gates blocking newly opened greenway

Cyclists and walkers using the new Tralee to Fenit greenway in Co Kerry came upon gates blocking their path just 24 hours after the new facility had been officially opened by a government minister. Some of those using the greenway were forced to turn back as the gates were closed across the greenway, blocking the route.

It is understood Kerry County Council has been made aware of the issue and was working locally to try to resolve the matter. One country councillor described the appearance of the gates as "disgraceful", especially coming so soon after the greenway had been opened at the weekend.

“I have contacted Kerry County Council as this should not be happening. People are having to go out onto the main road to get past the gate which is highly dangerous,” Cllr Cathal Foley of Sinn Fein told The Kerryman.

“For this to be happening a day after it was opened is absolutely disgraceful. So many people were looking forward to using the greenway this weekend as it’s a long weekend. To be met with this gate is completely wrong,” he added.

Minister of State at the Department of Transport Hildegarde Naughton TD last Friday officially opened the 11km greenway last Friday and people using it found the gates blocking their way the following day.

The Tralee to Fenit Greenway is 11.2km and follows the route of the Tralee to Fenit old railway line. It stretches from the townland of Ballynahoulort in Tralee to the village of Fenit. It will also give tourists and recreational cyclists a safe route to enjoy the views over Tralee Bay and provide a key link with the trans-European Euro Velo Route.
