A cyclist has been airlifted to hospital in Co Limerick after suffering injuries in a heavy fall at the Skoda Ring of Clare Cycle sportive in Co Clare today

A cyclist has been airlifted to hospital after suffering injuries in a crash at the Skoda Ring of Clare Cycle sportive in Co Clare today. The injured rider is in his 60s and is believed to be from Dublin.

He was one of an estimated 2,500 riders who took part in today’s event, which began at Clarecastle GAA Club. The rider who was airlifted was involved in a crash with another rider on the road between Lisdeen to Carrigaholt in west Clare.

One of the cyclists came off worse in the crash and he required medical treatment from the event’s medics and a crew of paramedics in an ambulance assigned to the event.

After being treated at the crash scene for a period, the Irish Community Air Ambulance was called in to airlift the man to hospital for further treatment.

He was taken by the Cork-based charity air ambulance service to University Hospital Limerick where he was being treated on Saturday evening. While he fell heavily and needed to be airlifted, the cyclist’s injuries are not believed to be life threatening.

The Skoda Ring of Clare Cycle sportive forms part of the international Skoda Celtic Cycle Series. Today’s event was hosted from Ennis with two options; the Ring of Clare 160km and the Ring of Clare 120km.
