Cycling Ireland increasing cost of one-day licences due to inflationary pressures

The cost of a Cycling Ireland one-day licence - needed to ride races, sportives or other events - is increasing. The national governing body said the price hike was required due to inflationary pressures

Cycling Ireland is increasing the cost of one-day licences, which are needed to ride or compete in sportives or races, saying the price must increase because inflationary pressures mean running costs are now much higher.

The national governing body said while cyclists were entitled to buy one-day licences, it encouraged those planning to purchase one to take out a full membership of the organisation instead.

It added the revenue raised from the sale of full memberships - which can be purchased by leisure, commuter or racing cyclists - "contributes to the support and development of cycling across the island of Ireland".

The cost of the one-day licence will increase from €10 to €20, or £9 to £18. The change in price is due to come into effect from February 1st.

"This is a necessary step brought about by increased costs and inflationary pressure which has been experienced by organisations nationwide," Cycling Ireland said in a statement confirming the price increase.

"Cycling Ireland members will not be affected by the measure and will simply pay the event entry fee (and not a one-day licence) when entering the event."

The national governing body explained its full membership was "designed for all cyclists", with benefits including insurance cover when cycling and discounts from some of its retailer and service-provider sponsors.

Furthermore, while the cost of a one-day licence was increasing, it could now be upgraded to a Cycling Ireland leisure membership, for the full year. Anyone taking out a one-day licence will have a unique code sent to them. They could then use that code to take out a leisure membership, with the cost of the one-day licence taken off the price of their new leisure membership.

A one-day licence provides the holder with a level of insurance cover while riding a Cycling Ireland event. Each one-day licence is specific to a single event.
