There may have been some mixed news of late on the road racing front, with numbers down for many events, but the sportive sector is holding up and the ever-popular Wicklow 200 & 100 is sold out this year.
The event, which takes place the weekend after next, was cancelled due to the pandemic in recent years but the return edition looks set to be a blockbuster; hardly surprising since Cycling Ireland membership numbers are so strong this year.
The Wicklow 200 and 100 organisers have issued some instructions ahead of the events next Sunday week, June 12th, as cut-off times will be in operation.
That means you must reach certain parts of the course by a set time and failure to do so will mean you’ll have to take a shorter route.
The first ‘cut off’ marker stipulates that all riders must reach Laragh Village by 10am on the morning of the event. Any cyclist who arrives at that location after 10am, for whatever reason, must proceed along the Wicklow 100 route.
Later in the day, and much further into the course, riders will arrive at the second ‘cut off’ time and point; at the bottom of the Shay Elliot climb in Clara. All riders must be at that point by 3.30pm.
Anyone arriving there after that time will not be allowed to continue to Rathdrum. Instead, they must go left and back into Laragh before going back to Bray via Enniskerry.
“They (cut offs) are there so that if, for some reason, you are delayed starting the event - something happens to you along the route, or your energy levels begin to drop - we can ensure that everyone taking part finishes in good time, without impacting on the health and safety of other cyclists and event volunteers,” the organisers said.
They have asked that all riders planning to take part in the event are aware of the cut off times and locations and that everyone cooperates with the officials and marshals on duty on the day.
Best of luck to all!
