An event is set to take place within Irish cycling that takes riders on a 340km route, from the east to west coast and must be completed in one day, with sunrise and sunset as the cut off times.
The event has been held in Scotland, England and Italy and is being held in Ireland later in the year. It will feature 3,100m of elevation gain. It is open to both individual riders and also to teams who want to complete it in relay format.
Called 'Chase the Sun' the event takes place on June 21st, starting in Belfast, before riding northwards for a stretch of coast between Larne and Glenarm. The route then swings westwards, all across Ulster before crossing into the Republic and finishing in Enniscrone in Co Sligo.
Sunrise on the day, for the start of the event, will be 4.46am, making for a very early start, while riders will have until 10:13pm, sunset, to make it all the way to the finish in Enniscrone.
"Chase the Sun Ireland starts at sunrise on the Irish Sea at the historic Titanic docks of Belfast, proceeds up the dramatic coastal road and through the Antrim Glens before heading inland to traverse forests, mountains, and loughs," the organisers have said.
"Riders explore the mythical landscapes and landmarks of the ’emerald isle’. The route crosses the border of Northern and Republic of Ireland, and finishes after 209 miles at sunset on the Atlantic beaches of Enniscrone."
It sounds like an epic challenge, especially for riders who decided to ride as individuals. But with almost four months to the big day, any interested has plenty of time to prepare.
There are three rates of entry, for different packages with varying benefits; £79, £169 and £549, with the latter a full package that also includes accommodation. You can get more information by following this link. And we've included the full route map below.
