Video: Watch Dublin cyclist's very close shave with van and dodgy trailer

Van driver, with a large trailer and dodgy load, narrowly avoided this cyclist and the oncoming car, all captured in this clip filmed in south Dublin.

Here’s a clip of an incident that all involved were lucky to emerge from unscathed though the cyclist and one of the drivers undoubtedly got the fright of their lives.

The footage - which you'll find at the bottom of this piece - was recorded by cyclist Luke Pepper in afternoon traffic in Dublin on Thursday.

It shows a van towing a large trailer with a bulky and unstable load giving Pepper a very, very close shave on Templeogue Road at Terenure College, Dublin 6W

With oncoming traffic clearly visible on the road, the van pulling the trailer overtakes Pepper when there’s a break in the traffic coming towards him.

The only problem is that the break was too short meaning the van doesn’t move very much, if at all, across the broken white line to give the cyclist safe passing distance.

And because a car his hurtling towards him, the driver of the van has dive back into the kerb very tightly, meaning the trailer in particular passes Pepper very closely.

In the photo above, the trailers aren’t even over the white line and the oncoming vehicle is visible in the right of the shot. All very, very tight indeed!

The trailer was hired and its registration apparently did not match the vehicle's.

This load does not look like the most stable one ever seen on the roads of Dublin.

What can you do about close passes?

The ‘Stayin’ Alive at 1.5’ campaign was established to lobby the authorities to bring in new laws requiring motorists to give cyclists 1.5 metres of space when passing them.

It’s running an online petition urging the Government to introduce new laws requiring motorists to pass cyclists at at least 1.5 metres.

Headed by Wexford-based cyclist Phil Skelton, the campaign was prompted by the deaths of two cyclists in separate road collisions in the county in a 12-month period to February 2013.
