Luke Plapp of Australia was a non-finisher in the OIympic TT in Paris after crashing heavily and being unable to continue. Josh Tarling of Great Britain also suffered a front wheel puncture, which cost him a place on the podium.
While Italy's Filippo Ganna finished 2nd, just 15 seconds behind winner Remco Evenepoel (Belgium) he very nearly crashed against barriers in the closing stages of the TT.
He somehow held it up and took silver with a powerful finish to push Wout van Aert (Belgium) into the bronze medal position.
Plapp clearly fell very hard at the barriers on the right of the road, he was moving and being helped up by a team staff member.
Cycling Australia initially said the 23-year-old had gone for medical checks - at a Paris hospital - and later published an update adding he had undergone surgery overnight.
"Lucas Plapp underwent abdominal surgery tonight in a Paris hospital after crashing in wet conditions during the men’s individual road time trial," it said.
"Plapp slid under a barrier fence shortly after passing the first checkpoint approximately 14 kilometres into the 32-kilometre course. His parents and an Australian team doctor were at the hospital with him."
Plapp, who rides for Team Jayco AlUla, had been going very well in the TT before his crash, recording the 4th quickest time compared to the riders who started ahead of him at the 13.1km checkpoint. However, he then crashed after that check and was forced out of the race.
