This is not a white line marking the edge of the road, it's the line that marks the cycle lane. The cycle lane is - incredibly - to the left of the painted white line.

We think we’ve found the narrowest cycle lane in Ireland. But please let us know if there are other contenders.

One stickybottle reader who has been out on his bike in Co Kerry was staggered to come across this bike lane.

And he’s contacted us with a simple question: At 6 inches (15cm) wide, is this the narrowest stretch of cycle lane in Ireland, or even the world?

Our reader, who doesn’t want his name used because of the warm welcome he gets in Kerry, explains the cycling lane he encountered.

“It’s located on the outskirts of Killarney on part of the cycle lane along the busy N72,” he said.

“It runs west from the town towards the Ring of Kerry and the Gap of Dunloe.

“The lane varies greatly in width and, like many others, it disappears completely on bends where it is most needed.

“Killarney is Ireland’s premier holiday destination and promotes the great outdoors as its main attraction. This is a poor reflection of its cycling infrastructure.”

The lane is very narrow to start with. But when the road twists and turns and becomes narrower, the bike lane is simply sacrificed.

And the really frustrating thing about facilities like this is that somewhere in the local council there's a spreadsheet showing cyclists are catered for on this stretch of road.

The reality, however, is somewhat different to an actual, fully functional and rideable, cycle lane.

What do we think? The worst in Ireland or pretty typical of many cycle lanes around the country?

Let us know your thoughts.
