Irish international triathlete gets four-year doping ban, instantly retires

Irish international triathlete Ben Shaw has been banned for four years. He was unable to explain a banned substance in his system detected during an out of competition test in July

Irish international triathlete Ben Shaw has been suspended from competition for four years for an anti-doping violation.

The 28-year-old, who was born in Australia and has been
based there of late, waved his right to a hearing in the case.

When the four-year ban was imposed Shaw announced he was retiring from the sport after failing to offer any explanation for the banned substance in his system.

In a ruling on the case, Sport Ireland said Shaw was
tested out of competition on July 22nd last, with LGD-4033 (ligandrol) found in
his sample.

Ligandrol has been found in testing to increase muscle
mass without adding fat. It has also been shown to have positive effects on
patients recovering from hip fracture surgery.

Shaw, a former sprint national champion, requested that
his ‘B’ sample be tested and, according to the Sport Ireland reasoned decision
in the case, he also requested the ‘B’ Sample laboratory documentation package.

“In response to the alleged ADRV (anti-doping rule
violation), the athlete acknowledged that the laboratory had identified the
presence of a metabolite of LGD-4033in his ‘A’ and ‘B’ samples, for which he
could not offer an explanation,” the reasoned decision published on Thursday
said.

It added Shaw “declined to exercise his right to a
hearing”. Sport Ireland said Shaw had “accepted a period of ineligibility of
four years” starting on July 22nd, 2020.

Shaw last raced at the Devonport OTU Sprint Triathlon
Oceania Cup in Australia at the end of February, placing 21st.
