These two videos are examples of the types pf cases that that Garda and the courts - if the cases progress that far - are pursuing against drivers in Ireland who pass cyclists too closely. While legislation was passed three years ago today making it an offence to dangerously overtake a cyclist, there are still relatively few self-recorded videos emerging depicting the incidents now leading to prosecutions.
However, one cyclist who uses the @righttobikeit handle on Twitter has published these videos of incidents that have just resulted in two successful outcomes for him.
In one case the driver was convicted of careless driving and was sanctioned with a €300 fine. In the other incident the driver was also convicted of careless driving, with a fine of €300 being imposed and five penalty points being imposed.
Cyclists are still reporting a patchy response from the Garda when they lodge their self-recorded videos as evidence - with some individual members of the force keen to receive the footage and advance the cases while other gardaí appear more reluctant. Some cyclists who have contacted stickybottle report that some of the gardaí they dealt with were not familiar with the concept of a close pass and had no experience of the legislation introduced in 2019.
