Gardaí appeal after cyclist knocked from bike by driver in endangerment incident

Gardaí are now appealing for witnesses and video footage after a cyclist was knocked from his bike in an endangerment incident

Gardaí investigating an incident in which a cyclist was knocked off his bike by a driver, and was hospitalised, at the weekend have appealed for witnesses to come forward and help their inquiry.

The incident in Dundalk, Co Louth - video footage of which can be found here - is being treated as "endangerment". It occurred on Sunday afternoon when the driver hit the cyclist from behind, by clipping him as he overtook.

The driver laughs after hitting the cyclist, a man in his 50s, and then drives away. Gardaí in Dundalk have launched a criminal investigation into the incident and they want to speak to anyone who was in the area at the time or who may have footage of the driver in his car.

"Gardaí are appealing for information following an incident of endangerment, involving a car and a bicycle that occurred at approximately 3pm on Sunday 27th on the Castletown Road in Dundalk, County Louth," the Garda appeal stated.

"The cyclist, a man aged in his 50s, was later taken to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda to receive treatment for his injuries. He has since been discharged. The driver of the car involved failed to remain at the scene.

"Gardaí in Dundalk are appealing for any witnesses to this incident or anyone with information to come forward to them."

Any road users who were in the Castletown Road area between 2.50pm and about 3.05pm on Sunday are asked to contact gardaí in Dundalk. Gardaí have also asked anyone who was recording dashcam footage in the area at the time, which may have captured the incident or the driver in the car at any time, to come forward.
