Former professional cyclist Chris Anker Sørensen has died after a crash with a driver in a car while he was cycling in Zeebrugge, Belgium. The fatal crash occurred on Saturday as the 37-year-old was about to start working at the World Championships.
"It is with great sadness that we learned of the death of our good colleague Chris," said Frederik Lauesen, director of Danish channel TV2 Sport, with whom Sorensen worked.
"He was in Belgium for the World Cycling Championships. Today, Saturday, he was out cycling and was hit by a car and he later died of his injuries. Our thoughts and deep sympathy go to Chris's family."
The former pro rider had worked for TV2 Sport since his retirement just three years ago. He had appeared as an anchor host on its coverage of major races and was in Belgium to work for the channel on the Worlds, which get underway tomorrow.
He claimed his biggest victory on the Giro in 2010; winning stage 8 into Terminillo. He also won stage 7 of Critérium du Dauphiné in 2008 into La Toussuire. He won the Danish road race title in 2015 and also won the Japan Cup in 2009.
In 2011 he finished 12th overall in La Vuelta and was 14th overall at the Tour de France the following year. During that 2012 Tour he was awarded the combativity prize having crashed and sustained a hand injury that required a surgical procedure, yet he still continued in the race.
His last season as a World Tour rider was in 2015, riding for Tinkoff-Saxo. He had ridden for that team, in its various guises, since 2007 when it was CSC Pro Team.
After leaving the Danish squad he went on to ride for ProConti outfit Fortuneo-Vital Concept, now Arkéa Samsic. He finished his career with two seasons, 2017 and 2018, at the Danish Continental team Riwal CeramicSpeed.
At the time of writing, no details about how the crash occurred were available, apart from the fact a driver in a car was involved.
